How to Care for Your New Tattoo

Taking care of your new tattoo will prevent complications and ensure it heals properly. The steps below follow the best practices in the tattoo industry for aftercare and will minimize issues like infection, a long healing period, or getting touch-ups later.

  1.  When you get your tattoo, the artist will cover it with a clear bandage that is waterproof and will keep it free from bacteria. The bandage can be left in place for up to five days and should be removed with water in the shower or sink.

  2. Wash gently and thoroughly with soap and water. It’s ok to lightly scrub your new tattoo by hand with fragrance-free soap. Don’t re-bandage your new tattoo, and always make sure your hands are clean when you’re cleaning your new tattoo.

  3. Pat dry with paper towels or a clean, dry cloth – ensure it’s completely dry.

  4. With clean hands, apply a small amount of unscented lotion.

  5. Repeat steps two through four a few times daily for the first three to five days.

  6. Keep your new tattoo clean and dry until healed. Avoid touching, picking, scratching, or excessively rubbing.

  7. ABSOLUTELY NO SOAKING YOUR TATTOO until it is fully healed – this generally takes two weeks. That means no baths, lakes, streams, oceans, etc. And under no circumstances get in a pool or hot tub. Chlorine will ruin your tattoo!

  8. Try and minimize exposing your tattoo to the sun for four weeks. After healing, always use a strong SPF sunscreen to prevent fading. Avoid tanning and excessive sun to keep tattoos vibrant.

  9. Contact the shop or artist if you have any other questions or concerns!
